First Inspection of Propeller Damage: Cavitation or Impact?

Not every surface defect on a propeller requires the same repair method. When the location and shape of the damage are reviewed together with the vessel's recent operating conditions, signs of impact, cavitation or fatigue can be separated more accurately.

Signs of impact damage

Impact damage usually appears as local bending, crushing or sharp marks near the blade tip or leading edge. The hub, keyway and shaft line should be inspected along with the visibly damaged blade.

Cavitation patterns

Cavitation can create grouped pits and progressive material loss. Their distribution across the blade provides useful clues about propeller loading, inflow or surface geometry.

  1. Photograph the damage from several angles before cleaning it.
  2. Record the RPM range where vibration increases.
  3. Note any recent impact or grounding event.
  4. Report changes in engine RPM and vessel speed.
